Chapter Six

Robbie was fast asleep on her couch. Corrine had covered him with a blanket, and she noticed that his thumb had found its way to his mouth—a fact that probably would have mortified the independent tyke in the light of day. As he slept, his lips closed tight around the thumb, he gave a powerful, contented pull on it.

It reminded her how small he was, how very young, how terribly vulnerable. And what a fragile thing was his trust in her. A trust that had been placed in her unquestioningly from the moment he had leaned toward her in the truck.

I’ve waited for you. I prayed for you to come.

She couldn’t believe that anyone would pray for her to come to them, but then ever since Matt Donahue had become a part of her life, she felt different, as if she was changing in some fundamental way, perhaps becoming the kind of person someone might like to have in their lives.

If she didn’t have a clue who she really was, how did a five-year-old boy?

And why did she think she could see who she really was in the enigmatic darkness of Matt’s eyes?

She had not seen Matt again since her donkey had hopped the fence hours ago. It was now after ten. She assumed that meant her donkey was still on the loose.

The phone rang, and she hoped it was him, but it was Abby. She wondered, uncomfortably, what it meant that she was disappointed. Only a short while ago, hearing from her sister filled her with a spreading warmth that seemed beyond compare.

And the warmth was still there, but now she did compare, to a different kind of warmth. Entirely. The honest truth? She wished it was Matt. She wanted it to be him.

“Well, did you try the experiment?” Abby asked.

“I did,” Corrine admitted.

“And?”

“The day was pretty nice.” she said. An understatement. She thought back. Fixing the fence in the bright sunshine, playing tag, all squeezed together in the cab of his truck, eating those delicious hamburgers, discussing the merits of pickles.

It had been so wonderful it scared her. She had wanted to pull back, think about where she was going, not just drift there. She had to think about how vulnerable she was prepared to be, because it seemed to her Matt Donahue was going to expect more of her than she could give, want her to be more than she knew she was.

But even her effort to get things under control had gone awry. And now there was a little boy asleep on her couch.

It seemed so normal, somehow. Wholesome. A little peek at what other people’s lives were like.

She thought of that kiss, Matt’s lips brushing hers, playfully, yesterday afternoon. Well, maybe it would be stretching it to call that wholesome, but still clean and fresh. Invigorating. Excitement with no edge of danger to it, unless emotions breaking free for the first time counted.

“So,” Abby said, “you want to try it for one more day?”

“Oh,
